The large bulk arent going to get actually suitable aspirations met due to the fact that of what theyll be dealing with. No matter your political leanings, theres simply no great to come of failing children like weve been doing.
JFK said were going to be on the moon in 10 years, which was really simply unbelievable if you think about it. I informed him, “Im a doctor, and kids are not getting the help they require. Am I going to invest more time talking about children and the requirements that they have?

Irwin Redlener is a pediatrician, creator of Columbias National Center for Disaster Preparedness and regular visitor on MSNBC.
Millions see him on MSNBC nearly every night: Dr. Irwin Redlener, the seventy-something pediatrician, who is also the founder of Columbia Universitys National Center for Disaster Preparedness.
As an agreement specialist for the news and commentary cable network, Redlener has, for the past eighteen months, helped Americans understand the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the same time that hes been educating the country about pandemics, the pediatrician has actually been struggling with his own extremely personal health questions.
The male who can point to a dizzying list of achievements– from co-founding the Childrens Health Fund, which serves New Yorks children; authoring two books: The Future of Us: What the Dreams of Children Mean for Twenty-First-Century America and Americans at Risk: Why We are Not Prepared for Future Megadisasters and What We Can Do Now; organizing rock shows to raise funds for indigent communities impacted by disasters; assisting the victims of starvations in Africa– isnt sure what to do next.
I spoke with Redlener about his activist approach to public health, as well as his rock and roll connections. Hes a Columbia teacher who has, for decades, been partnering with music giants to do social good. Along the way, hes dealt with Paul Simon to produce and sustain the Childrens Health Fund, an advocacy and service company that provides pediatric care to underserved neighborhoods in New York and the American South. Hes dealt with Marc Anthony, Joan Baez, and lately, Cher, assisting them parlay their celeb into tasks that were helpful to the poor and the homeless. Most just recently, Dr. Redlener dealt with Cher to encourage COVID vaccination.
Heres a big question: whats next for you?
What Im struggling with now is just what I should be doing with the time I have left.
Are individual health-related concerns driving your seriousness around this?
Simply attempting to be practical. Im typically great, just stabilizing a number of chronic issues and handfuls of medications every day. My father passed away of a stroke at 60, and although Im working complete time and very active, Ill be 77 in a couple of weeks … suffice it to say, my next car lease will be much shorter than my typical three-year agreement!
Why is making a difference such a driver for you? Is it just who you are, or did something happen along the way?
Well, [April 1971] Im in the doctors dining room at the University of Colorado, where I was a pediatric cardiology resident, bring my tray, and I walk by a bulletin board system. There was a poster to recruit doctors to come to Lee County, Arkansas. It was a black and white image of a doctor strolling down a deserted country roadway. It said, heres the data, heres whats going on.
It was the 6th poorest county in America, and I was simply drawn to it.
The following weekend, I was there in Lee County. I came back to Denver, dropped my fellowship in cardiology, and took this job in Lee County for 2 years.
This was a developmental experience?
It was amazing. I d go on house calls, and I d be followed by people from the KKK, weapon racks on their pick-up trucks. It was deep poverty, and for the bulk, an African American community led by an extremely conservative, racist power structure.
I discovered a lot in a really deep and emotional way about what it was to be a doctor.
This experience led you to activism?
One time, an infant died. It was really ill, and I couldnt get there. The roads were muddy and impassible.
Then I thought, “What the hell am I doing?” This kid required good healthcare, but he likewise needed for me to get there. It was immediately evident to me that we had to get the roadway fixed as a medical professional.
I ended up going around speaking at Baptist churches in rural communities. Telling them, we require to fix this. “I cant assist you if I cant get to you.” We have to vote. The connection of politics and policy to healthcare and health and wellbeing was so stark; you could not avoid it unless you made an effort to avoid it.
Serving children appears to be a through-line in your profession. Why children?
The large bulk arent going to get truly appropriate aspirations fulfilled since of what theyll be dealing with. I find that to be truly godawful. No matter your political leanings, theres just no excellent to come of failing children like weve been doing.
I believe we just messed this up. I didnt believe we couldnt make a distinction. When I grew up, there was something about growing up. JFK stated were going to be on the moon in 10 years, which was really simply outrageous if you think of it. But we were. We got there.
I guess I was just spoiled by a sense that we might do whatever needs to get done.
Youve been on the MSNBC/NBC payroll for 15 months as an on-air expert. Do you feel that youve stepped into an opportunity to accelerate making a difference?
Im on 3 to five times each week on MSNBC, however Im pigeonholed into COVID huge time.
I had a couple of shots talking about the building collapse in Miami. Were facing amazing crises, climate modification, and infrastructure problems.
I actually would like to “un-pigeonhole” myself and talk more extensively about disasters and likewise childrens problems.
Where are we with COVID at this point?
Were seeing a huge boost in the variety of cases, practically all of them related to the Delta version. This is a very hazardous and extremely vibrant moment in history.
Most recently, you and Cher collaborated to assist the underprivileged offer with COVID. How did that happened?
In 2015, Cher called me. She d seen me on MSNBC and said, I wish to do something about COVID. She was providing a million dollars to do something, and she asked me to help her find out what to do with it, which is what Ive been providing for the previous year with Cher.
When did your collaborations with stars start?
When in Arkansas in the 80s, the center I was at was running out of cash and Richard Nixon was pulling money back from neighborhood health centers which were my base of operations. Manny Greenhill, Joan Baezs manager. Joan was in the prime of her profession.
A couple of weeks later on, I was examining a kid, and the nurse comes in and states someones on the phone for you. Long-distance. She states her name is Joan. Joan agreed to do a show to raise cash. That was my first experience with a big-time star.
Joan and I are still good friends.
How did you connect with Paul Simon?
When I was medical director for USA for Africa (1985-1987), Paul Simon was a vocalist on the “We are the World” record. One day Paul Simon calls. Hes in New York City, and he gets very concerned about homelessness. I took him on a trip of homeless hotels as shelters in New York City which was an incredibly distressing experience for Paul. We ended up being pals, and he said what can we do to assist? I told him, “Im a physician, and kids are not getting the help they need. Why do not we put together a mobile kind of program for pediatric service that will permit us to go to different shelters?” That was the origin of the Childrens Health Fund.
What is it about you that made you the go-to individual … that has drawn that type of connection?
I dont know. I deeply, really think in the things I work on– the vulnerability of children, disasters, etc.
What are you believing about tackling today?
Youre capturing me at a point at the same time where Im trying to sort this out. Am I going to invest more time talking about kids and the needs that they have? I certainly would enjoy to do that. What about the catastrophes of the world were facing?
Simply take one of the awful consequences of climate modification, the boiling over of the West. Thats my struggle right now. What exactly is going to be the focus?
So now youre asking me a concern? Ok. I know whatever follows, it will be something big. You dont do little things. Im sure Ill wish to discuss it.
Right. (Laughs.).
