Exclusive: Luxury Escapes’ CEO Schwab on lockdowns, borders and hot destinations

As Australia edges closer to re-opening worldwide borders in November as the nations double-vaccination target of 80% is reached, need for holidays are set to skyrocket and one of the companies thats anticipating a flood of reservations is Luxury Escapes.

The Melbourne-based company is understood for its value-based packages in Australia and abroad and to discovered more about what travellers can anticipate later this year, HM took a seat for a candid chat with Luxury Escapes Co-Founder and CEO, ADAM SCHWAB.

Adam, whats your view on the existing lockdowns at present?

But as someone from Melbourne, the damage lockdowns have caused to childrens educations, psychological health, domestic violence and alcoholism– let alone not having the ability to welcome 18,000 refugees each year is simply enormous. I believe well look back in a years at this duration and realise it was a terrible example of enormous government overreach that will trigger significant long-lasting damage.

Lockdowns are ironically good for Luxury Escapes as we sell lots of volume domestically on a Covid-Zero environment if were taking an ultra-rational short term view. Also, it motivates vaccinations which imply quicker border re-opening which is the main game for the majority of travel companies.

Los Angeles will be high up on the list of Australians from November

There are suggestions New South Wales and Victorian citizens could be taking a trip to Los Angeles or London prior to Perth without quarantine– what are your ideas on this?

Its definitely looking most likely that NSW residents might be taking a trip as quickly as November. Ultimately, an open Victoria and NSW (and ideally Queensland) would be fantastic for the sector. WA internal travel remains strong, so if Mark McGowan wants to keep WA locked away, we do not believe it will be excessively impactful given the demand wave that will originate from the 15 million people in Victoria and NSW.

Will this only drive homeowners of some states to think more about taking international trips?

Weve seen in the last few weeks since the Federal and NSW Governments have been much more positive about international travel, and Qantas statement, that the demand for worldwide travel has skyrocketed. While its coming off a low base and off a small sample size, the state of mind certainly seems shifting with a growing variety of Australians now turning their mind to scheduling trips for early 2022.

Popular with Australians: Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort

Which worldwide locations are you seeing the most interest, and domestic too?

Weve seen consistent demand for Bali through the pandemic with members buying plans and not securing their travel dates till they have more certainty surrounding travel timing. More just recently weve seen exceptionally strong need for Thailand and the Pacific Islands. Domestically Queensland, in spite of border closures, stays popular for Victorian and NSW tourists, and theres been continued strong demand for intra-state travel, particularly in Queensland and WA.

What more needs to be done to support the Australian travel industry prior to travel is free-flow once again?

The only thing we truly want from Government is to simply get out of the method and enable completely vaccinated Australians to be able to depart without needing an exemption and return without requiring quarantine. This is actually the only thing stopping the travel market from rebounding and is the rule setting in practically every western country around globally.

Qantas is taking off for the USA, Asia, Fiji and the UK from November

Luxury Escapes parent company Lux Group is looking at raising AU$ 60-100 million in development capital at present– what can you tell us about that?

Its definitely looking likely that NSW locals could be travelling as quickly as November. WA internal travel stays strong, so if Mark McGowan desires to keep WA locked away, we dont believe it will be overly impactful offered the demand wave that will come from the 15 million individuals in Victoria and NSW.

Its still early days while doing so, but were searching for a percentage of capital to help us turbo charge development coming out of the pandemic.
