Solar eclipse looks otherworldly in ‘Golden Ring’ astrophotography shot

Taking home top reward in the “Our Moon” category was Nicolas Lefaudeux of France, who captured an image of a crescent Venus increasing over Earths moon. (Image credit: Deepal Ratnayaka/ Astronomy Photographer of the Year 13) Winners took in their huge views from significantly different vantage points. For “The Milky Ring,” a 360-degree view of the Milky Way that won the “Galaxies” category, Chinese professional photographer Zhong Wu sewed together images taken in Sichuan and Qinghai, China, and Lake Pukaki, New Zealand. Some shots required professional photographers to be in precisely the best location at exactly the best minute: The “Planets, Comets and Asteroids” winner was taken by U.S. professional photographer Frank Kuszaj, who was attempting to shoot remote galaxies when a Quadrantid meteor fireball blew previous his lens.
