Turn Up the Volume with this Quartet of Noisemaker Science Activities!
Make Your Own Harmonica!: Make a harmonica from craft sticks, straws, and rubber bands and observe how vibration of the rubber bands creates acoustic waves.
Can You Kazoo?: Make a basic kazoo from a cardboard tube and explore different materials for the covering at the end to see which produces one of the most vibration when the kazoo is played.
Build a Disk Siren: Make a disk siren using a plastic lid with holes punched around the rim and after that experiment to see how different noise patterns are produced based upon how fast the disk is spinning.
Paper Squawker: Use paper to make a little instrument that “squawks” when you blow in it. Experiment to feel the vibrations associated with the sound waves and check out methods to change the pitch of the noise by altering the design of the squawker.
With New Years events coming, these short science jobs are a great method for trainees to check out the physics of noise and make something they can utilize, too!
Whether you are trying to find last-minute concepts for the science class prior to winter break or recommending enjoyable DIY science concepts for trainees to explore in the house, these hands-on science activities make finding out about sound enjoyable– and loud!
