First Multiple-Sol Drive on Mars for NASA’s Perseverance Rover

Mars Perseverance Sol 351– Left Navigation Camera: Sol 351 Perseverance Navcam image. Recalling at rover tracks and over South Séítah during the sol 350-352 multiple-sol drive as the rover autonomously browsed around Séítah from the Western to the Eastern edge. The image was taken after the second sol of the multiple-sol drive. The rover started at the severe upper right, beyond the ripple field. Perseverance capped its first year on Mars by speeding back around Séítah toward what is anticipated to be the final sampling location in its crater floor campaign. The drive on Mars was split throughout three various sols performing instructions prepared in a single day in the world, making this Perseverances very first multiple-sol drive.
It produces a chance to drive an excellent distance in a longer plan, normally throughout weekends or holidays when brand-new planning doesnt take place on Earth. Recently in the sol 350-352 strategy we commanded a three-sol drive that resulted in the longest-single-sol overall range recorded by any Mars rover (319.79 m) on sol 351, and the longest range of any Mars rover in a single plan without ground intervention (509.75 m).
As the rover drives it accumulates some uncertainty, or mistake, in its knowledge of where it is on Mars. The rover understands that as its driving its understanding of where the keep-out-zones are is getting less certain. We reset the position unpredictability to no every time we uplink a brand-new set of drive instructions because we likewise localize the rover specifically on Mars.

Due to the fact that we must evalute and produce 3 times as many drive course sectors and associated surface assessments, Planning a three-sol drive is likewise more complicated. At preparation time we can not understand precisely where the previous autonomous drive will end up on Mars, and this requires to be factored into each sols drive strategy. Longer command development and evaluation times are likewise compressed into a single planning day.
We have arrived at Ch ał for our last crater flooring sampling and are looking forward to much more multiple-sol drives on our journey to the Jezero delta!
