Does Planet Earth Have a Mind of Its Own?

Humanity is quite happy with itself often. Weve constructed a more-or-less international civilization, weve cleaned out lethal illness, and weve traveled to the Moon. In their short article, the authors point out how organisms altered Earths biosphere. It not only altered the course of evolution, but it also changed the very geology and geochemistry of the world. The authors compare the cumulative activity of photosynthetic organisms to collective intelligence.

The authors explain how collective activity alters the world. They base their experiment partly on the Gaia hypothesis, which says that the Earths non-biological systems– geochemistry, plate tectonics, the environment, the oceans– interact with living systems to maintain the entire planet in a habitable state. Without the “cumulative intelligence” of the biological world, the Earth would not be habitable.
The authors utilize an example from forests to illustrate the point.
Earths terrific forests could not exist without the network of mycorrhizal fungis that live below ground. Tree roots engage with the network and the network moves nutrients around in the forest.
