Autumn in the Adirondacks – Vibrant Fall Colors Pop In Satellite Photos

The image above shows autumn color around Elizabethtown, New York. This relatively unbroken forested landscape puts on a trusted show of seasonal color. Other locations had the ideal recipe for fall color: a cool, damp summertime followed by a cool, dry autumn. In northern New York, leaf color was expected to be dynamic, but peak later on in the season than normal.

Around 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Elizabethtown, forests near the town of North Hudson were also seeing vibrant displays of fall color (image listed below). From North Hudson, the Blue Ridge Road winds to the west and bisects the Hoffman Notch and Dix Mountain wilderness areas.

Fall color reaches its peak when air temperatures drop and reduced daytime activates plants to slow and stop the production of chlorophyll– the particle that plants use to manufacture food. When the green chlorophyll pigment fades, various yellow and red pigments become noticeable.
