Convenience or culprit? Checkout aisles overflow with unhealthy snacks and drinks

Health risks

In their research study, the scientists found most food and drinks at checkout were sweet (31%), sugar-sweetened drinks (11%), salted treats (9%), and sweets (6%).

The scientists examined checkout lanes in over 100 stores in Davis, Sacramento, Oakland, and Berkeley. Stores consisted of grocery stores, grocery stores, specialized stores, pharmacies, dollar stores, and mass merchandisers. They did their analysis in February 2021 before a law in Berkeley asked shops to offer nutritious options at the checkout.
