Uber Eats is using AI to generate food images — and it gets it very wrong

Back in January, an app called Lunchbox thats basically an AI food image generator was launched. We asked AI to produce images of some of our own preferred foods. They look convincing, but seriously, look at that avocado.

Back in January, an app called Lunchbox thats essentially an AI food picture generator was released. We asked AI to produce images of some of our own preferred foods.

When youre purchasing online, photos of food are essential. You truly want to know what the item looks like. Yet for some reason, some restaurants do not post online photos of their food. “Thats fine,” Uber Eats should have believed. “Well just make up some images with this neat AI technology everybodys discussing.” Except it wasnt great– it backfired amazingly.

” A guy from Tonys named Sal called me back 5 minutes later on and said he was very baffled about what was occurring and that he didnt understand what AI was. I tried to discuss it and he simply said I do not learn about this stuff, however I didnt authorize these images”.

The first hints came from text: AI is good at generating visual imagery, however it tends to garble up text. Evaluating by what users are stating, Uber Eats is tricking both its users and its restaurants.

There was another hint that something was incorrect: in New York, “pie” implies “pizza”– but the AI didnt know that.

” Its truly strange,” says Twitter user Online Boy while on the phone with Tony Pizzeria in Brooklyn, New York City. “I tweeted about it and 30,000 people liked it and everybodys stating its a ghost cooking area or the dining establishments picking this and I said No, its not a ghost cooking area its a real traditional shop and I can not imagine they would choose this.”.

They look convincing, however seriously, look at that avocado. AI innovation holds enormous potential but we cant just blindly use it.

Some people believed it might be the restaurants doing this. But social networks users called the dining establishments and it ended up, they had no concept.

It didnt take long before other individuals began posting other AI-made images. They look nearly excellent enough but the more you check out it, the weirder it starts to look.
