The eruption is located about 4 kilometers (2 miles) northeast of the town of Grindavík and about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Icelands capital, Reykjavík.The eruption began with water fountains of lava shooting lots of meters into the air along a 4-kilometer crack and streaming laterally from 5 vents. Topographic maps of the area show 3 hills to the west of the eruption crack that reach heights of approximately 200 meters.Reports from the Icelandic Met Office show that lava is mostly flowing east and north, which postures minimal dangers to Grindavík, the Blue Lagoon, and other neighboring facilities.”Minimal Impact on Air Travel and Safety MeasuresIcelandic authorities have emphasized the type of eruption that is occurring– a crack eruption– does not generally result in big explosions or substantial production of ash lofted high into the atmosphere.
