Heres how it works: Beetles have a tough exoskeleton with little pliability. That shell lowers fluid evaporation. Scratch that casing rather of crushing it and beetles leak. Fear in the Garden
Beyond pee, theres another possibility for managing insects without pesticides. Worry. Put the aroma of worry in your garden and it will grow for you instead of for the bugs.
” It is not unusual to utilize our senses to prevent dangerous circumstances. If a structure was on fire, we as humans might utilize our senses of sight or smell to detect the threat,” says Sara Hermann, principal task investigator at Pennsylvania State University. “There is evidence for such behavioral actions to risk across taxa that suggest victim organisms can identify predation hazards.”
Hermann and her team at Penn State extracted the smell profile of ladybugs, an aphid predator, then exposed aphids to the profile one fragrance at a time.

Aphids responded to specific compounds with signs of worry, which can include area avoidance, lower reproductive rates and the inability to grow wings. The team mixed those specific high-fear-response substances and produced an essential oil. Scent diffusion tests in the field are next.
