Simple Daily Activities – Like Washing Dishes – Reduce Heart Disease Risk in Senior Women

” The study shows that all motion counts towards illness avoidance,” said very first author very first author Steve Nguyen, Ph.D., M.P.H., postdoctoral scholar at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health. “Spending more time in daily life movement, that includes a broad variety of activities we all do while on our feet and out of our chairs, led to a lower threat of cardiovascular disease.”
Researchers used a machine-learning algorithm to classify each minute spent while awake into one of five behaviors: sitting, sitting in a car, standing still, every day life movement, or running or strolling. Every day life motion encompasses activities happening when standing and strolling within a room or patio, such as when getting dressed, preparing meals or gardening.

As part of the Womens Health Initiative Objective Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Health study, scientists determined the exercise of almost 5,416 American females, who were aged 63 to 97 and who did not have cardiovascular disease at the start of the research study.
Individuals used a research-grade accelerometer for up to 7 days to get precise steps of just how much time they spent moving and, importantly, the types of typical life habits that result in motion and are rarely included in prior research studies of light and moderate-to-vigorous strength physical activity. Those prior research studies generally focused on intensity and period of activities like running and vigorous walking while the existing research study determined smaller movements at varying strength throughout activities like cooking.

Cardiovascular illness continues to be the leading cause of death among both females and males in the United States with rates highest in adults aged 65 or older.
In this research study, 616 women were detected with cardiovascular disease, 268 with coronary heart problem, 253 had a stroke, and 331 died of cardiovascular disease.
