NASA’s Europa Clipper Taking “Message in a Bottle” to Jupiter

Participants are motivated to check out the Europa Clipper “Message in a Bottle” website, where theyre welcomed to listen to an audio reading of the poem told by Limón, and by clicking her name at the bottom of the poem they can watch an animated video of the narrated reading.

NASA believes in getting the public excited about area, and theyre bring on this custom by just recently revealing that area fans from around the globe can travel to Jupiter with the Europa Clipper mission. Though, not literally, however by adding their names to a microchip for the “Message in a Bottle” project that will also include “In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa”, which is an original poem by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón.

Upon sending their name and e-mail address, the individual will get an image of their name on a piece of string-tied, rolled paper in a corked glass bottle with Europas icy surface area in the foreground and the enormous Jupiter with a glowing Europa Clipper spacecraft in the background. Participants can then download the image free of charge directly or by means of the e-mail they receive and share with their friends and family!

Its what drives humanity to ask the big questions that this objective will contribute to,” said Dr. Laurie Leshin, who is the director of NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California, which is spearheading the development of the Europa Clipper spacecraft. While Europa Clipper and its “Message in a Bottle” arent arranged to release up until October 2024, its ongoing assembly at a JPL clean room can be viewed live on YouTube. As soon as there, it will perform 50 low-altitude flybys of Europa, coming as close as 25 kilometers (15 miles) of the surface area in hopes of determining if Europa is capable of supporting life.

Message in a Bottle is the perfect convergence of art, innovation, and science, and we are delighted to share with the world the opportunity to be a part of Europa Clippers journey,” Dr. Nicola Fox, who is the associate administrator for NASAs Science Mission Directorate in Washington DC, said in the announcement. Limón had the benefit of checking out JPL in January 2023 to both see the Europa Clipper spacecraft up-close and learn more about its amazing mission to the icy world.

” Message in a Bottle is the best convergence of science, art, and innovation, and we are thrilled to share with the world the chance to be a part of Europa Clippers journey,” Dr. Nicola Fox, who is the associate administrator for NASAs Science Mission Directorate in Washington DC, stated in the announcement. “I just love the idea that our names will be traveling across our solar system aboard the radiation-tolerant spacecraft that looks for to unlock the secrets of Jupiters frozen moon.”.
Born in Sonoma, California, Ada Limón is an acclaimed author of Mexican descent, with her most significant works being “The Carrying”, which was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award, and “The Hurting Kind”, which was shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize. In 2022, Limón was designated 24th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry by Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, making her the first Latina to be named a U.S. Poet Laureate, and consequently reappointed to an additional two-year term in 2023. Most just recently, the NASA Artemis I mission enabled individuals to include their names to a flash drive that took a trip with the mission around the Moon and back, and NASAs Perseverance rover objective enabled individuals to send their name on a microchip positioned on the rover.
The overarching objective of all these projects, from the Golden Record to Europa Clippers “Message in a Bottle”, is to fire up the interest and imagination of space and astronomy fans from all over the world.
” Inspiration is what fueled the people who established this flagship objective and who hand-crafted the biggest spacecraft NASA has actually sent out to explore the solar system. Its what drives mankind to ask the big concerns that this mission will contribute to,” stated Dr. Laurie Leshin, who is the director of NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California, which is leading the advancement of the Europa Clipper spacecraft. “Inspiration is riding in addition to each and every single name that will be making the journey to Europa.”.

While Europa Clipper and its “Message in a Bottle” arent arranged to release up until October 2024, its continuous assembly at a JPL tidy space can be seen live on YouTube. As soon as introduced, the spacecraft is arranged to perform two gravity helps– Mars in February 2025 and Earth in December 2026– before being tossed to Jupiter for its arrival in April 2030. Once there, it will carry out 50 low-altitude flybys of Europa, coming as close as 25 kilometers (15 miles) of the surface in hopes of figuring out if Europa is capable of supporting life.
Will the “Message in a Bottle” bring Europa Clipper good tidings as it explores Europa, and what new science will Europa Clipper expose about this mystical, icy world? Just time will tell, and this is why we science!
As constantly, keep doing science & & keep looking up!

The Europa Clipper “Message in a Bottle” project constructs off past NASA projects that involve sending out names or other tokens of Earth on deep area missions. The most notable campaign is the Golden Record of the Voyager missions that was an elaborate effort including a variety of institutions, disciplines, and people.
In the end, 2 records were made with each consisting of 115 images, plus music, sounds, and greetings in a number of current and ancient languages of Earth with each record sitting on the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft in hopes of an extraterrestrial civilization finding them one day. In preparation for the records being discovered, the researchers consist of a cartridge and stylus and instructions on how the records might be played.
