Exploring Earth From Space: Cancún, Mexico Captured in Stunning Satellite Image

Isla Mujeres, Spanish for Island of Women, is visible just north of Cancún Island and is most popular for its beaches and snorkeling. Isla Contoy, visible in the top-right of the image, is considered one of the most important nesting locations for sea birds in the Mexican Caribbean with more than 150 types of birds.
Quintana Roo covers a location of around 42,000 sq km and is house to several secured locations consisting of the El Eden Ecological Reserve, situated 50 km northwest of Cancún, and Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protected Area, located in the north of the state. Including more than 150,000 hectares, Yum Balam is home to numerous threatened species consisting of crocodiles, monkeys, and jaguars.
The color of the water in the image differs from emerald green to turquoise owing to the changing water depths along the coast, turbidity, and distinctions on the ocean floor– from sand to seaweed to rocky areas.
With its 13 spectral channels, Copernicus Sentinel-2s unique imager can capture water quality specifications such as the surface area concentration of chlorophyll, find damaging algal blossoms, and procedure turbidity (or water clearness)– giving a clear indicator of the health and contamination levels.

Cancúns location on the Caribbean Sea, tropical climate, and string of beaches have made the city and the Riviera Maya to the south of Cancún one of Mexicos leading traveler locations. In this image, captured on April 16, 2021, the city can be seen in the bottom-right corner, shrouded in clouds. Cancun International Airport, Mexicos second busiest airport, lies around 20 km south of the city.
The Cancún Island resort area, noticeable just off the coast, is shaped like the number seven and is around 22 km in length. The island is separated from the city by the Nichupté Lagoon but is connected by 2 causeways at each end. Many of the traveler industry is fixated Cancún Island with its Caribbean-facing beaches.
