On This Day in Space! Jan. 14, 2005: Huygens probe lands on Saturn’s moon Titan

On Jan. 14, 2005, a spacecraft arrived on among Saturns moons! The European Space Agencys Huygens probe rode on NASAs Cassini spacecraft to Saturns biggest moon Titan. It parted ways with the mothership about 3 weeks prior to touching down on the icy moons surface area. An artists impression of the descent and landing sequence of ESAs Huygens probe onto the surface area of Titan. The Jan. 14, 2005 landing was the culmination of a 22-year procedure of planning, arranging and cooperation in between ESA and NASA. (Image credit: NASA/JPL/ESA) This was the very first time a spacecraft had actually ever arrived at a moon in the outer solar system. Huygens took some fantastic pictures and gathered a lot of data, which exposed that Titan has lakes and seas of liquid methane and ethane, replenished by rain from hydrocarbon clouds.Catch up on our whole “On This Day In Space” series on YouTube with this playlist.
