Rock-solid geology puns that will make you erupt in laughter

Its quite an enjoyable profession, if occasionally physically intensive, but its peppered with long stretches where not much takes place. Whether youre hiking to an outcrop or hitching a flight to a great formation, you have to kill time in some way. Beverages are therefore much valued in the field of geology, however puns are a close 2nd– especially when you require to stay productive.

Im likewise a huge fan of puns. Today, I invite you to sign up with in on the fun with a few geology puns that I find quite amusing. Audible groaning and eye-rolling arent only acceptable, theyre encouraged. Just give me a minute to dig some great ones up. Ill make sure theyre all clastics.

Ahhhh, geology. The worthy art of hiking to rock, hitting rock with hammer, and then developing its specific rockiness.

To begin with:

Lets whet your apatite

Apatite is a group of minerals rich in phosphorus and ions of other substances and elements, such as hydrogen-oxygen, chlorine, or fluorine. While it can be very pretty, many apatites end up being crushed and processed into fertilizers. Unfortunate.

One actually geeky reason I enjoy this pun is that apatite itself is a little bit of a meta-pun. Apatite crystals arent particularly unique, so the mineral gets confused with other geological types quite frequently. In reality, its extremely name originates from apatein, an ancient Greek for deceive or dupe.

Moving on promptly, lets discuss what motivates us to study geology in the very first location:

We come for the cleavage and remain for the joints

Its pretty much like college!

Some of us never get into geology. And I get it. It might look like theres no requirement for new students, for originalities, because

Unlike college (once again, unfortunate), cleavage refers either to features in rock produced by pressure and heat if youre a geologist, or to the tendency of crystals to split across certain planes if youre more of a mineralogist. Joints are fractures in rock, separating blocks that move relative to one another. They tend to form under tensile, rather than shearing, tension.

Dont get thrilled too quick. These are the joints were discussing. Credit: Wikimedia Commons.

Numerous geologists are out standing in the field

Ehehehehe. They left no stone unturned. Perhaps theyre actually hectic with

Embeding orogenous zones

I believe we might have struck rock bottom with this one. Forgive me, but not whatever is borne of orogeny; sometimes

Thrust faults are tears in rock formations where older strata are pushed above more recent ones. Orogenies, being mountain-building events, will certainly develop such faults.

Igneous is bliss

I love my task.

Igneous rocks form from the cooling of lava deep inside the earth. Theyre also referred to as volcanic or magmatic rocks (if they form from magma oozing out of a volcano). Still,

Studying volcanoes can be tuff

Tuff is generally rock-ified ashes. Volcanoes gush out a lot of ashes (and burning lava)!

And like with tectonic plates, dating a geologist can cause friction

Since its a hotspot.

Anyhow, please keep in mind to always call your WiFi “Yellowstone”.

If you know any great geology puns, do not be afraid to share them in the remarks listed below. And thank you for being this client and understanding. We all have our faults.

This short article originally appeared in 2019 and was upgraded with new details.

Puns– theyll always exist when you hit rock bottom. Some people will not like them, and theyll smack you over the head if you attempt to make puns. Theyre what geologists call karst holes.

Its popular that geologists do a lot of dating, carbon dating that is. Seriously, however, geologists make for fantastic life partners. Theyre actually down-to-earth people.
