After the disastrous loss of 2 back-to-back objectives to Mars in 1999, NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory found itself at a crossroads. The Opportunity rover ran on Mars for over 14 years, far surpassing its expected life expectancy of simply 90 days, and made various cutting-edge discoveries that advanced our understanding of the Red Planet.
